Can you believe it’s already August? The summer internship season sure is flying by, but there is still one full month to make the most of your time in DC.
And, you don’t have to break your (tiny) intern budget to enjoy DC either. There’s lots of great free events and activities you can do right throughout August. So whip out your calendar and pencil in these 3 things in.
3 Fun Things To Do For Free In Washington DC
1. Screen on the Green
When it comes to summer traditions in Washington DC, Screen on the Green is definitely an old favorite. Held on the National Mall, you can sit back, relax and enjoy some Hollywood classics on the gigantic movie screen.
Be sure to bring a blanket, some snacks and drinks (to keep hydrated in the DC heat), so you can camp out and enjoy the warm nights DC has to offer. The movies are shown on Monday night through out summer and usually start showing between 8:30-9pm. Some early birds start claim their spots from 5pm, so if you’re free early in the evening, pack a picnic (and some popcorn) and make a night of it.
2. Fort Dupont Summer Concert Series
Fort Dupont Park is a popular spot for all types of summer activities. From picnics, to skating and sports, you find it all in Fort Dupont Park. During the summer it also hosts a series of free outdoor jazz concerts every Saturday evening at 6pm.
I know Jazz is a little different, but it’s so much fun. So why not grab a blanket, pack a picnic for dinner and make a real cheap evening out of it (us interns have to be thrifty after all!)?
Gates open at 5:30pm. You’ll find Fort Dupont Park at Minnesota Ave. and Randle Circle, SE, Washington, DC.
3. Cool Down At A Public Pool
Let’s be honest, DC gets HOT in the summer and one of the best ways to cool down is by splashing around in a public pool. There are a lot of great public pools around DC, so you’ll be spoilt for choice. If you have a DC license you are guaranteed to get into all of these for free. The pools are open and busy most days throughout the summer.
I gotta say, all of the public pools in the DC area are top notch, but I found a great list on Curbed.com that had some of the creme de la creme of public pools around Washington DC. Check them out here.
Have you tried any of these yet? Or have you taken advantage of any of the fun, free (my favorite word!) activities you can do around DC in summer? If not, you better get cracking. Time is flying by and summer will be over before we know it.
