The Refugee Crisis – Historical Perspectives from Europe and North America Mar 17, 1:30pm – 6pm
The half-day symposium will look closely at five cases from the period between the 1940s to the late 1990s: (1) the German expellees after the Second World War; (2) decolonization migrants to France, the Netherlands, and Portugal in the 1960s and 1970s; (3) the 1956/57 Hungarian refugee crisis in Europe and North America; (4) Salvadoran refugees in the United States in the 1980s; and (5) refugees to Western Europe and North America during the Yugoslavia Wars in the 1990s.

Environmental Film Festival: Written on Water Mar 20, 4pm – 6pm
Filmmaker Merri Lisa Trigilio’s modern western, Written on Water, shows how farmers’ heritage of independence collides with the reality of groundwater decline. Against the harsh landscape of the High Plains, innovators in places like Olton, Texas fight to keep their towns alive. In Olton and other communities sharing the Ogallala Aquifer, the reality of groundwater decline impacts the legacy of self-reliance that first turned the High Plains into a fertile dreamscape. A reception and discussion with the filmmakers follow the screening.
