Clanton August 12, 2014

Washington DC – While recent grads are busy entering the work force and getting after it, some college students are getting ready for the fall. It’s really just getting after it in a different way. The end of summer is nothing to be sad about, guys and gals, it’s actually something to embrace and look forward to. It’s the start of new beginnings and great networking opportunities to be had by all. Trust me, I know. I’ve been doing it for four years. Now’s the time to really kick things into gear.

Are you ready? You ready to get after it? You know you are! Here are three reasons why.

1. You Need a Break From Summer Break

The first thing is the most obvious. You’re just ready to get back to your life. You’ve spent the last three months interning, traveling abroad and spending time with family and old friends. Probably all at the same time. And while that might sound cool, it isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Getting back to your life on campus sounds much more liberating and productive. And it is.

2. A New Year = A New Beginning

Like I said above, a new school year means new beginnings. It’s a chance to try new things, refine your career goals and refocus on what it is you really want to do. Think of it as a fresh start. Fill out your calendar now with all of your most important things you’re going to accomplish this year and what you have to look forward to. It’s a way to get a jump on what lies ahead.

3. The Holiday Season Means Great Volunteering

The holiday season presents some pretty great volunteer opportunities that you should definitely take advantage of. I’m a frequent visitor of volunteermatch.org, which gives a robust listing of all volunteer opportunities happening in DC and around the United States during the holiday season. There’s currently 634 of ’em. I’m sure you can find one for you. Search the site and plan accordingly. Also, there’s this to think about: from Labor Day to New Year’s, you’ll see pretty much the near perfect balance between class and time off. That’s a great way to ease back into the school year.

So, welcome back to campus. Plan ahead and make this academic year your year. It’s not the end of summer, it’s the beginning of new opportunities.

By Billy J.
