Saying the wrong thing not only compromises your position, but it can also undercut your ideas. When you speak with confidence and decisiveness, you just might get that promotion or get hired full time. <strong><em>Here are&nbsp;10 cringeworthy things interns should never say at work.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Think first, then respond. If a request is absurd and you feel angry, take a breath and say you\u2019ll get back to them about it later.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>1. \u201cI\u2019ll try.\u201d<\/h2>\n<p><strong>As Yoda famously said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #c90000;\">\u201cDo or do not. There is no try.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Be confident you will get it done. Often, we may realize the time frame is really tight, or we don\u2019t have enough information to get it done. So we say we\u2019ll try. Better to ask for more time or the information you need. That shows thinking and the gumption to ask for what you need.<\/p>\n<p>Present yourself as capable and confident. <strong>Phrase it like this: \u201cI will get it done,\u201d or \u201cI\u2019ll take care of it.\u201d<\/strong> Let them know that they have chosen the right person for the job.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>2. \u201cThat\u2019s not my job!\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>This is the fast track to make enemies in any work environment. Obviously, you don\u2019t want to be a doormat, but before think before telling someone else that something \u201cisn\u2019t your job\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you have to decline a request, Emily Post suggests: <\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #c90000;\">\u201cI\u2019m not sure if I can help you this time because of my workload\u2026I might not be able to give it my full attention.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Or, \u201cThanks for asking me but you need to know that I can\u2019t take on any more work\u2014I need to focus on my top responsibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Simply saying it\u2019s not your job is sure to anger the other person and cause trouble for you in the office.<\/p>\n<h2>3. \u201cThis wasn\u2019t in the program description.\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s close to this isn&#8217;t my job. But as an intern, you\u2019re there to help out around the office and to learn. There are going to be times when you are asked to do things you don\u2019t expect. Saying that you\u2019re in charge of something, or that you\u2019re allowed to use a special office feature that you\u2019re not will cause you problems and cause distrust.<\/p>\n<h2>5. \u201cNo, thanks! I packed lunch for myself.\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>If your co-workers ask you to come out for lunch with them, take advantage of the opportunity. That&#8217;s what you&#8217;re here for! This gives you a chance to make new friends, and it may even give you brownie points with your supervisor. We challenge you to find an employer who doesn\u2019t love a \u201cgreat team player\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6303\" src=\"http:\/\/atdevserver.com\/Projects\/Internsdc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Things-Interns-Should-Never-say-Quote.jpg\" alt=\"Things-Interns-Should-Never-say-Quote\" width=\"400\" height=\"469\"><\/p>\n<h2>6. \u201cThis company needs better management.\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>If you say this out loud at the office, you may just want to punctuate that statement by seeing yourself out.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #c90000;\">Never undercut your boss or the company.<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This phrase not only accuses your current manager of doing a poor job, but also suggests you think you could do a better job. No matter who you say it to, or how loudly you say it, it\u2019s going to get you in hot water. Keep it to yourself.<\/p>\n<h2>7. \u201cThis may not work, but\u2026\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>There\u2019s no nice way to say it: this preface comes across as wimpy. Instead, be confident in what you say and demonstrate your value when you speak. If you have an idea, just put it out there. Prepare yourself before you do, so you have it all thought out. <strong>If you really think it won\u2019t work, don\u2019t waste someone\u2019s time talking about it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>8. \u201cIt will need to wait.\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re asked to do something and you reply this way, you\u2019re going to look bad and get scorn from the other person. Instead, explain what you\u2019re working on, and say you\u2019ll get to the task as soon as you can. It\u2019s also important to understand priority and be flexible in a case like this.<\/p>\n<p>That new request might be even more important than what you are working on, so stay informed and don\u2019t make assumptions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emily Post suggests saying something like this:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #c90000;\"> \u201cDoes this take priority over what you\u2019ve asked me to finish by Tuesday by 2:00?\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>9. \u201cCan you repeat what you said earlier during the meeting?\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Noooooo. When you\u2019re in a meeting, bring along a computer or notebook to take notes. It is your responsibility to retain the information. Show you are paying attention, and avoid asking again later.<\/p>\n<p>If you really need something, you could ask for clarification of a certain point. State what you know and ask a question. Any form of gossip.<\/h2>\n<p>If it sounds like gossip and stings like gossip, it is gossip. This isn\u2019t a fire you want to play with. It\u2019s generally very poor form to gossip about other employees while at work, and even worse, it will lead to others gossiping about you too.<\/p>\n<p>Gossip can be hurtful, and it reflects badly on you.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #c90000;\">They\u2019ll wonder what you are saying about them and avoid talking or confiding in you. Don\u2019t be that guy.<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As an intern, you aren\u2019t officially part of the company just yet, and saying the wrong thing hurts your chances of getting an offer or job recommendation in the future.
